Jobs in Alaska?
Finding a fishing job in Alaska isn’t that easy these days, especially on a crab boat. And it’s hard to imagine any skipper hiring someone who simply leaves a name, phone number, or email address. If you’ve got ‘Deadliest Catch’ fever and are serious about pursuing work in Alaska, you’ll most likely have to do the research on your own, and go after the job yourself. Deadliest Reports absolutely has no connection to getting any such work for anyone, but feel free to check out the links below…

One of the few ways to get to Alaska with work lined up, is to get hired on a seafood processor. Several of the ‘Deadliest Catch’ boat websites such as the Northwestern and the Cornelia Marie also state that starting out with a processor job may be the way to go. Anyone wanting a job on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska?? Do what I did! fly to Alaska, Go to a port town and walk the docks! The only way to get a job is to get here and earn your stripes, GREENHORN! I actually first went to work for a cannery. Did that for one week and started walking the docks. I started in Bristol Bay and then brought the boat to Kodiak, and started walking the docks again.
I have had the experience of a lifetime! I will be working on the F/V Incentive, featured in season 5, this summer in SouthEast Alaska, Tendering, to the Herring Fisheries, and Salmon Fisheries. Hopefully this will help me earn a spot Crabbing. You have to start at the bottom and typically you need to put in 2 years of greenhorn status.
I have fished Pots, Seiner, Longline, Jig, and Gillnet. This is no joke work! I have almost been killed 2 twice, and escaped serious injury many times, tore ligaments in a knee, had surgery all in a year. You need to be aware of everything out here! I love this stuff! Like Phil said in the show “Ya gotta be kinda twisted, to do this job.”

Crewman jumps into sea, refuses rescue
VICTIM: 40-year-old likely committed suicide in cold water, investigator says.

A crewman on a Bering Sea commercial fishing boat leapt into the deadly cold water and fought rescue efforts before vanishing, authorities said Friday.
“At this point it looks like a suicide,” said Thomas Lowy, a state trooper at Dutch Harbor.
The victim was identified as 40-year-old Michael Leo Beaulieu. His commercial fishing license lists his home as Frisco, Colo., but he might have been somewhat transient, Lowy said.
Crewmen aboard the fishing vessel Arctic Fox reported Beaulieu jumped overboard shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday.
The boat, which had been fishing for cod using traps known as pots, was heading to Dutch Harbor and was about 11 miles to the northeast when the man jumped, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
Beaulieu, who wasn’t wearing a survival suit, “refused to swim toward a life ring thrown to him and swam away from a fellow crewman who donned a survival suit and went in to rescue him,” a Coast Guard news release said. “The man then reportedly dove and was not seen again.”
A Coast Guard helicopter stationed in Cold Bay searched 16 square miles in blowing snow and fog but the crewman wasn’t found and the search was suspended at 4:25 p.m. Thursday.
Seas were running at 6 feet and the water was 37 degrees, cold enough to cause hypothermia and death in a matter of minutes.
No foul play is suspected based on interviews with the boat’s five other crewmen, who were pretty shaken up, Lowy said.
“They took it pretty hard,” he said.
State records list the owner of the 58-foot Arctic Fox as Wahl Fisheries of Reedsport, Ore. The vessel was built in 2006.
Beaulieu didn’t leave a suicide note, but he made “some odd comments” to his fellow crewmen that, in retrospect, seem to be signs he was troubled, Lowy said.

Hi Guys!
I see lots of you applying for a job on this site. Actually, it is a fan site- the boat skippers might not even be reading it. From what they have said on the show, the best way to get a job in Alaska is to go there and look. The Captains also warn that the competition for jobs is fierce. There are other sites that give info on jobs- such as on line newspapers classified ads. Good luck! Hope you each find the job you want on a good boat.

I was just laid off from working on tug boats in New York, would love a job aboard a crab, halibut or longliner. I have ten years of commercial lobstering experience, and hold a commerical license. Not sure what this might do, but I have been having a hard time finding another job that allows me to work on the water-couldn’t work in any other enviroment.

Greetings.. fear not, I’m not going to give a job application here lol. I was just curious from anyone who had worked or works with one of the processors, which is one of the better ones to work for. Not naive enough to just jump on a boat, thinking about getting my feet wet and learning the environment more by starting at the bottom. Any information would be great.

I have worked in the wine industry for 10 years. I have worked long days (16-18 hrs, 7 days a week for 2 1/2 to 3 months in a row) Never as cold as you guys or nearly the danger involved. (or at least not the same dangers….CO2 environments and heavy equipment, compounded by delerium) I just have to say I would love the test of personal character, but I’m not that f’n crazy!!!! LOL Just wanted to let you guys know that I will NEVER complain about the price of Alaskan crab again. I have been on a NJ Lobster boat and quite frankly, Lobster is WAY overpriced and Alaskan Crab should be at least twice as much.
