I can not understand with the technology available today why those who fish for crab do not have T.V. cameras on tethors looking at the bottom for places where the crab are located before they drop their pots. Perhaps it illegal, or do the fishermen not have the technical ability to put the system together and operate it? Its really very simple, it need not be expensive and I am certain in the short and long run it would be a money making idea and operation.

I’ve been looking everywhere for the DVD of this. I wanted to buy the Redneck the season where the greenhorn falls in the Bering Sea and Captain Roger Strong guided the crew to saving him. *sob*

Hey Jen, Kevin Davis’ rescue on the FV Saga was part of “American Deadliest Season”, a three-part documentary from 2004. This hasn’t been put on DVD yet, but the more letters, the bigger chance it will. Kevin shows up again on season 1 working on the FV Lucky Lady.

I’ve been trying to find a synopsis of how the Deadliest Catch series got started. It would be very interesting to know the original proposal, planning and scheduling of the series from it’s initial beginnings. For instance, did Discovery come up with the idea? Or was it initiated as a suggestion from one of the captains? Did Discovery select the boats on the show? Or was it someone else?
Our family LOVES the show and we all have our favorite ship and crews to cheer for. It’s become similar to our love of NASCAR and cheering on our favorite drivers to win. So it would be really interesting to know how the show began and the process it went through to becoming such a great success.
One of the things that doesn’t get said enough is the expert narration by Mike Rowe. His voice and talent for narration really add to the humor and the drama of the show!
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful series.

Mike Rowe actually had the idea after he had the idea for “DirtyJobs”, tried to sell “DJ” first, Discovery wouldn’t go for it, went for Deadliest (he was on the boat with camera crew for the first season), then after it’s success he got “DJ” on air – that’s why he just does the voice-overs on Ceadliest Catch and hosts the “After the Catch” shows. Both shows just totally rock!
PS – fun fact – Mike Rowe can seriously sing! True- he actually studied opera for a while

Will the Rollo (I think that’s what it was called) be on any upcoming episodes?

I have watched the first show years ago, it started with a guy on an airplane,
headed back to the states. The camera first pans onto a necklace the guy is wearing, you can not tell what it is as the camera pans out further, you see that his “charm” on his necklace is his missing finger, that he had just lost his finger from Crab Fishing. And he says how he lost it.
Then the show starts. It was so cool.
But, like all reality tv series, ALWAYS the first season is the best.
That is truely when every one is REAL, the camera is just there & every one is just doing their job. No one is Famous yet.
I do love this show & the people in it, I was wondering why some of the other ships from the first season are not on now. It was better with more ships & crew..
Thanks for sharing your CRAZY lives with us all. And fish a little safer now that you have TV $$$$$$ in the bank…
From Cocoa Beach, Florida….

MIke Rowe makes both shows what they are. His voice and reflection are golden doing the narratives and explainations on DC and DJ.
Was wondering if any of you have the 6 disc set for season 3 of DC. I have the 3 disc set but saw a 6 disc available on Amazon.com, just wondering if it was something new/different or just spread out.
Thanks…

I bought the 8 disk set of DC season 4 on Amazon and was so disappointed, it lacked table of contents, titles and search abilities. Amazon refunded my money and I have the genuine DC set for season 4 including all five ATC segments in MA. I wish we could add the behind the scenes to these DVD sets.

To Answer Wayne’s question re the use of cameras to find crab, I’m a Kodiak resident, my father and brother fishermen many years, and if there way a way to use something as simple as a camera to find crab everyone would be doing it. Most of the fishermen use radar and depth finders that show mounds, but that’s not reliable. Also, when they drop the pots they go DEEP, too far for a camera to be able to see, simple an impossible suggestion. Any fisherman would be laughing at this idea and so would you if you knew what the waters are like here.

I see there are questions about buying the episode discs. Discovery Channel’s website has some nice SALEs with many of their TV series season discs heavily discounted; Deadliest Catch seasons are included. I don’t know if that includes the Behind the Scenes or After the Catch footage.
I keep seeing folks fishing resumes posted on this site, or greetings to the skippers and crews of the boats. However, I think this site is for the fans, and doubt if any of the skippers ever look here.
A recent check-in on the Discovery site provided some unused scenes from last season. Very interesting! And a little something to tide us over until April 14!

WOW POWERFUL first episode! I don’t know how or if it was a preview show but a week ago I saw the 1st episode of this season with the lost ship and death of 4 out of the 5 crew and it was not only emotional but exciting. Trust me when I say don’t miss this one! This show has taken Reality TV to a whole new level!
