It is not hard to get a fishing job in alaska. But the internet is not the place to do it. What capt would hire someone they know nothing about based on words on a screen. You have to hit the docks and be ready to work on a moments notice.
Any one that really wants to fish Alaska is fishing in Alaska not looking for a job on the internet.

If you are looking for employment on a boat, they hire in Seattle or through the State of Alaska Department of Labor’s Seafood Hotline. You can learn more about working in Alaska’s seafood industry at the following site:

    or call 1(800)473-0688 or 907-465-8900

Remember, everybody has to start somewhere and you may have to start as a processor before you ever get a chance to work on deck.

Lost job at Port of New Orleans due to hurricane katrina; Longshoreman/Trucker w/ HAZWOP/HAZMAT/HAZCOM + lots of extra safety training. Sea duty as galley assistant- also experience cleaning oil tanker engine room in port. I am 51 but I can hold my line & my mud. Can’t f— like I used to but can fight ‘n’ hold the light. I’m in Reno to take college environmental classes but would rather be working…my great-grandpa was an Alaska fisherman from Finland and my family originally homesteaded there. I could seriously consider right opportunity. I have clean records for port/harbor security clearances. Thanks, “Seahorse”

I was out there afew years ago working on a trawler, it sucked. I would much rather be on a King crab boat anytime. I was a lobsterman for six years and could show some of those greenhorns how it’s done. Granted I turned forty over the spring, but I know I could still work my ass of for any Captain. Be it King crab or opilo I would bring it.
I hope the Captains read these, I would be a happy to work for you. Thank You.

  27. I have been shooting video for about ten years and I would love to be apart on one of the vessels shooting, seriously I want to do this soo bad….

  28. ben depaz said

I work as a processor on a trawler, F/T Unimak, maybe you have heard of us, we kick ass!! I actually fly back to Alaska this Monday, I love the guys I work with and am content with my job. I think that its hard to find a good dynamic in your crew, but when its there, its there. This is only my second year fishing, but if I can get on a good crab boat that pays as good as the trawler I work on.. let me know.. depazben@aol.com or 509-679-9985.. needless to say.. i kick ass too.. haha..

I can not believe that amount of people that are willing to go fishing in the Bering Sea in the dead of winter thinking it is going to be “fun”. They don’t call it “Deadliest Catch” for nothing. As a past fisherperson I only have one suggestion to all you greenhorns begging to go put your life on the line. Stop thinking it is a cake walk and think about how your family will feel if you don’t come back. That is a real possibility up there EVER time your boat leaves the dock. It’s a great show but nothing can show you what it is like to be in a storm or get hit by a rogue wave. A couch is safe, a crab boat is not. Think about it.

  35. Carrie said

I’m just curious when all you yahoos think the captains of the Deadliest Catch vessels are reading your “resumes.” Is it when they’re on the boat and supposed to be watching for 40 foot waves, when they are on the boat and have 3 hours to sleep after being up for 50 hours straight, or when they’re finally off the boat and with their families for only 6 months out of the year?
If you’re THAT serious about working for them, do some real research and MAIL them a resume.

i’m 20 years old 240lbs and i was working in alaska for 3 months on a fishing vessel, i worked for the fishing company of alaska, i worked my butt off and then took a break ,now they’re putting me off well they have been for 7 months. i think this might be my only chance to actually send a message to help me get on a crab boat, i’m looking for new experiences that will test my knowedge and ability to work hard and take a beating out on the bearing sea, even though i worked out on the bearing sea for 3 months i dont think that was enough, i’m a quick learner and a hard worker, and looking for a experience that would mentally, and physically abuse my muscles and mind and put me to the limits

at 57 years of age, 3 broken necks, 4 hip surgeries, 2 lower back surgeries,& I am battling cancer. I do believe my calling to be a crab fisherman has come to a end. I do have a ” bucket list ” I would Love to sit down and have a beer or 2 with the Captains. My first exposure to Deadliest Catch was in 2002, as I was re-cooping and re-grouping from broken neck # 2 Discovery ran a program on the most deadliest jobs in the world. They were lumped into one; lobster fisherman in the far North Atlantic, 2). were the Aussie Cowboys that dive for blue fin tuna, trying to beat the sharks to the boat3). crab fisherman. What a long strange trip.

  51. i am 40 years old i work on the rivers of the U.S. though it is nothing like the open sea im a quick learner and have endured very cold weather not as cold as the sea provides but neverthe less cold i am an assistant engineer, i was a deck supervisor for a year looking forward to hearing from you, put me to work, thank you. We are NOT a part nor will we be in the show “Deadliest Catch”…. We will fish and we will make money, but there will NOT be cameras filming so don’t ask!!!

I was a Crabber until i saw one of the guys on my boat fell in and we lost him Right before the Exxon Valdez sank. I Worked on the Francis Lee, The Pavlof, Liberty, some others 8 years in Dutch.

  56. Steve said

Some of you people are serverely misguided. Think about it. The vast majority of these crewmen got on a crew by either being there (Dutch Harbor) when someone got hurt or they knew someone on the crew who vouched for them and they got on board before the season.

And you guys that are over 35? Sh’yeah, as if. I purse seined for 8 years and quit when I turned 28. It was kicking my butt already….no sleep, HARD work, and lousy weather. And crabbing is much, much worse. NOt that there aren’t guys that old doing it, but rare is a 40 y.o. guy that could take the heat that a greenhorn gets.

If you old farts really want a fishing job, hang out around the docks in Ketchikan and see if you can hook up on a seiner. It’s not like it’s a gravy job, but you’ll be a lot closer to town when they air lift you to the cardiac care unit. ;)
