DEADLIEST CATCH      Season 2  Episode Guide    2005/2006

1.  HEADING OUT TO SEA:  October in Dutch Harbor means only one thing:  king crab season.  Bering sea weather reports warn of some of the roughest seas the fleet has seen in years.  A massive storm system is moving in.  The captains must decide whether to shove off or batten down.

2.  BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES:  In the pre-dawn hours of October 17, the king crab fishing fleet enjoy rare, calm weather.  Though the weather is cooperating momentarily, there is word of an impending storm and the decision must be made to run or to fish.

3.  ON THE CRAB:  One of the worst storms in years rages, but the fleet continues its hunt for the deadliest catch:  Alaskan King Crab.  in spite of a torrential downpour and a blinding snowstorm, the crews push on.

4.  THE FINISH LINE:  After a profitable offload on Akutan Island, Captain Sig Hansen and the Northwestern crew get back on the trail of the Alaskan King Crab.  Meanwhile, the crew of the Maverick witness a change in command as their Captain stands down.

5.  FRIENDS AND RIVALS:  A rogue wave knocks the Aleutian Ballad on its side.  power is down and the engines are dead.  The crew scrambles wildly in the dark, regains power, and the boat rights itself.

6.  A NEW HUNT BEGINS:  January on the Bering Sea is one of the coldest and roughest times for crab fishing and the Time Bandit departs from port in the middle of the first big snow storm of the season.

7.  SMOKE ON THE WATER:  An arctic storm presses futher in the crab grounds and the fishing gets tougher.  The Time Bandit crew contends with a new foe:  the encroaching arctic ice pack.

8.  MAN VS. ICE:  Hopes for a quick Opilio crab season fade as heavy sea spray ices the fleet down, shifting the race to catch crab into a slow crawl.

9.  ON THE EDGE:  The Time Bandit finds the ice pack and discovers that it’s much closer to their gear than expected and the entire crew of the Maverick works through a shipwide flu epidemic as they pull a long string of 100 pots.

10.  PRIBILOF STARE:  The icey decks of the Cornelia Marie claim their first victim when a deckhand takes a nasty spill and the Timebandit’s deckhands must break from fishing to beat thousands of pounds of icy buildup from every inch of steel.

11.  RACE AGAINST THE ICE:  The Cornelia Marie offloads on St. Paul island, but unfortunately for Captain Phil and his crew, they aren’t offloading crab, they drop off injured deckhand Dave Millman.  Now the Cornelia Marie crew must finish out their season one man down.

12.  CASHING IN:  At the end of the season the entire fleet digs in deep and kicks the fishing into overdrive.  The dangers of the Bering sea still rage.  With full holds and iced-over decks full of pots, the risk of tipping over while steaming back to port is high.

Just a comment about breaking in “greenhorns”. Although, I have not seen all the episodes, it appears that the Hansens are tough and demanding without being demeaning or belittling like so many of the other crews. I especially like Sig’s approach to not shaking a greenhorn’s hand until they earn the right to shake the captain’s hand. A significant event and one comes to be appreciated at the end of a good run verus something taken for granted. Kudos to the crews in Dutch Harbor but my hats off to the Northwestern and the Hansen family.

    Cheers and Happy Hunting!
