Unsurprisingly–for the 3rd consecutive year– ‘Deadliest Catch’ has been nominated for an Emmy award in four different categories! Even though the reality and nonfiction programming categories seem to get larger and more competitive every year for this highly sought-after award, ‘Deadliest Catch’ managed to bring one home last year. Let’s hope for even better this year! …For those of you watching the season 5 marathon today, play close attention to the episode Stay Focused or Die, as that is the eppy that has garnered the Emmy attention this year.

‘Deadliest Sea’ was just advertised on Discovery during the 4th of July ‘Deadliest Catch’ marathon and is set to premiere on July 19th so stay tuned for more details! There are a couple of previews available to view–one on Discovery and another on E1 . It’s a tale that is sure to haunt ‘Deadliest Catch’ fans as well as anyone interested in a fascinating but tragic true story of a night at sea gone wrong.
The film is said to be based on Working On The Edge by Spike Walker however it sounds as though it’s the story of the St. Patrick and it’s crew, written about in that book and later on in another by Spike Walker called Nights of Ice. According to Walker, the boat and it’s crew became victims of a Bering Sea storm that forces them into their survival suits and then into the freezing water. From there it is a true survival tale for the men and woman as they must try to survive in frigid waters known to kill in minutes.
Thom Beers–creater of ‘Deadliest Catch’ is also the executive producer of ‘Deadliest Sea’
DEADLIEST SEA tells the story of a young man who joins the crew of a King Crab trawler in Alaska seeking to make some real money. The captain of the vessel plays a hunch about where to set traps in the Bering Sea, but the boat and crew are soon victims of a powerful and relentless storm which turns the ice cold sea into a death trap in the pitch black night. As the doomed vessel sinks, the men fight a desperate battle for survival against the brutal elements.

Is there anyone in the world who’s seen a movie or watched tv, who doesn’t know who Steven Spielberg is?
….I didn’t think so, so I’ll spare all of us from reading the mega-list of awards won and films directed/produced by this icon who was once voted as the most important person of his generation.
Earlier this week, Steven Spielberg was interviewed by Boston University as he’ll be receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at their Commencement later this month.
During the interview Spielberg was asked to discuss television, specifically what he likes to watch, and this is what he said:
You started in television. Do you think TV is still a good training ground for filmmakers?
TV is a good training ground. I think the best writing today is being done for television, with some exceptions in the motion picture side of things.
Any particular shows you’d point to?
Anything David Kelley (LAW’83) touches. Aaron Sorkin’s years on The West Wing. This was Paddy Chayefsky–level writing. I love watching cable movies. I love watching network series that are well written. I always watch Mad Men. I watch the new show Southland that John Wells does, which I think is genius. The other thing is I watch a lot of reality television. It’s a guilty pleasure. My favorite show on the air right now is Deadliest Catch.
Do you ever see anything on those shows you’d incorporate into your own approach or thought process?
The only thought process I have when I’m watching Deadliest Catch is I hope I’m never caught at sea in a storm.
Read the interview
How exciting is that? …I mean really–Steven Spielberg watches ‘Deadliest Catch’!?! All of us ‘Deadliest Catch’ fans are really in good company, aren’t we?

CatchCon, it’s happening today! From the Seattle Times Online…
The strangest catch: Fans of Discovery Channel show gather in Seattle
Skippers Sig Hansen, Phil Harris and the testosterone-charged Bering Sea crab fishermen from the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” will drop anchor in Seattle Saturday for CatchCon, the first convention for this pop-culture phenomenon.
If you didn’t know about CatchCon until now, then:
1. You are already out of luck — it’s sold out. And …
2. “Deadliest Catch” loyalists wouldn’t consider you a hard-core fan, anyway.
Fans of the “Deadliest Catch” look at CatchCon as their Trekkie convention, with die-hards coming from as far as Wisconsin, Maryland and Florida. It’s one of the hottest tickets in town.
On March 24, the Discovery Channel revealed to a few fan sites that the skippers, many of whom live in Seattle, would talk about their sea adventures, lead boat tours and sign autographs at a free convention for their fans.
Word spread through cyberspace. By next morning, 500 fans registered, the maximum capacity, with another 600 wait-listed, a Discovery Channel spokesman said.
For weeks, organizers didn’t reveal CatchCon would be held at the Bell Harbor International Center, for crowd-control purposes.
One of the lucky CatchCon ticket holders, Melissa Lobach, of Reading, Pa., is such a fan that she discusses each episode with her girlfriend on Skype between commercials.

Episode 1–April 14th EVERYTHING ON THE LINE
The 2008 king crab season opens with life and death stakes before the boats even cast off. The fleet is aging, and so are the captains. The Wizard’s skipper Keith and the Cornelia Marie’s skipper Phil have ominous health symptoms. Nerves are raw as the two men await medical test results — and their doctors’ clearance to fish. As the fleet launches, the captains are under huge financial pressure from costly summer boat repairs; they need to get on crab fast. One skipper arrives on the crab grounds and discovers he isn’t able to fish at all — due to a damaged hull. To make repairs, he puts on diving gear and descends into waters few men return from — the icy Bering Sea.
