Upcoming NEW ‘Deadliest Catch’ Special & yes, another Marathon!

Posted by opilia on July 8, 2009

So ‘Deadliest Catch’ fans, do you have a little spare time to dedicate to ‘Deadliest Catch’ on Sunday, July 19th–by any chance?

I ask because at 1pm central on that ’special’ Sunday, the ‘Deadliest’ extravaganza kicks off and continues til the wee hours of the morning!

You’ll be able to watch season 5 again from the opening of the 2008 season on October 15th, 2008 all the way to the end of the King crab fishing episodes but there’s so much more…

At 8pm eastern, Discovery is airing a one-hour special called, “Roughest & Toughest Moments”–and you know there’s been plenty of those!  The episode description reads:
Deadliest Catch has captured the most gut wrenching and awe-inspiring moments in maritime history. Now see the best of the monster seas, boat-crushing ice, scary rescues, wallet-stuffing crab pots, fights, and selfless heroism – all part of the job.

And if that’s not enough, lets not forget the 2-hour movie ‘Deadliest Sea’ that’s been in the works for the last year.  It will be airing from 9pm-11pm eastern:
In Kodiak, Alaska, the crew of the St. Christopher prepares to go fishing and sets sail into the face of an oncoming arctic storm. This movie is a thrilling tale of struggle and survival in the fierce open sea.

So you can see now–between the King crab Marathon of season 5, the brand new special, and the full length movie based on a true Bering sea story you should probably clear the calendar don’t you think?

‘Deadliest Sea’ to Premiere July 19th on Discovery!

Posted by opilia on July 4, 2009

‘Deadliest Sea’ was just advertised on Discovery during the 4th of July ‘Deadliest Catch’ marathon and is set to premiere on July 19th so stay tuned for more details!  There are a couple of previews available to view–one on Discovery and another on E1 .  It’s a tale that is sure to haunt ‘Deadliest Catch’ fans as well as anyone interested in a fascinating but tragic true story of a night at sea gone wrong.

The film is said to be based on Working On The Edge by Spike Walker however it sounds as though it’s the story of the St. Patrick and it’s crew, written about in that book and later on in another by Spike Walker called Nights of Ice.  According to Walker, the boat and it’s crew became victims of a Bering Sea storm that forces them into their survival suits and then into the freezing water.  From there it is a true survival tale for the men and woman as they must try to survive in frigid waters known to kill in minutes.

Thom Beers–creater of ‘Deadliest Catch’ is also the executive producer of ‘Deadliest Sea’

DEADLIEST SEA tells the story of a young man who joins the crew of a King Crab trawler in Alaska seeking to make some real money. The captain of the vessel plays a hunch about where to set traps in the Bering Sea, but the boat and crew are soon victims of a powerful and relentless storm which turns the ice cold sea into a death trap in the pitch black night. As the doomed vessel sinks, the men fight a desperate battle for survival against the brutal elements.
