There’s been several requests to see Keith Colburn’s ‘After the Catch’ Baked Alaska recipe so courtesy of Discovery, I’ve posted it here. Any one try it, please give us a shout! By the way, are you ready to watch ‘Deadliest Catch’ all day tomorrow?
Captain Keith’s Baked Alaska!
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound cake, 1 lb. frozen loaf
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, in brick box
2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced and sweetened with 2 tablespoons sugar
1 dozen egg whites
1 cup powdered sugar
2 cups orange-flavored liqueur (imitation orange liqueur will not work)
DIRECTIONS:
Slice pound cake horizontally into five thin slices. To build cake: Place one slice on foil-lined baking pan. Remove ice cream from box. Cut into two pieces and place on top of cake slice. Place two slices of cake along the long sides of ice cream. Cut one slice in half and place on ends. Spoon strawberries on top of ice cream and place last slice of cake over top. Press together firmly with hands to form compact loaf cake. Sprinkle over all with 1 cup orange liqueur. Set aside in freezer while making meringue. (This can be made ahead to this point. Wrap tightly in foil to avoid drying out.)
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
To make meringue: Beat egg whites on high until soft peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating constantly until stiff peaks form. Working quickly, place one-third of the meringue in a pastry bag. Set aside. Completely cover cake with remaining meringue, spreading evenly and completely, sealing bottom edge. With pastry bag, decorate top and sides. Set in 450-degree oven for 4-5 minutes, or until meringue is lightly browned. Quickly slide onto a chilled serving plate. To flambé, heat orange liqueur and pour over cake. Light immediately.
Slice and serve immediately. (If not ready to serve immediately, place baked Alaska in freezer so ice cream does not melt. Flambé when ready to serve.) Serves 8-10.

Unsurprisingly–for the 3rd consecutive year– ‘Deadliest Catch’ has been nominated for an Emmy award in four different categories! Even though the reality and nonfiction programming categories seem to get larger and more competitive every year for this highly sought-after award, ‘Deadliest Catch’ managed to bring one home last year. Let’s hope for even better this year! …For those of you watching the season 5 marathon today, play close attention to the episode Stay Focused or Die, as that is the eppy that has garnered the Emmy attention this year.

For the week of 07/13/09…
The second episode of Syfy’s new drama “Warehouse 13″ retained an impressive 97% of its premiere audience Tuesday night. The show delivered 3.4 million viewers.
> ABC Family’s “10 Things I Hate About You” (1.6 million) didn’t fare so well, dropping a sharp 31% from last week’s debut.
> Over on Discovery, “Deadliest Catch” (3.6 million) continues to rule, standing as the top-rated cable show of the night in the adult demo.
> New Bravo series “Miami Social” (648,000) couldn’t draw a crowd out of the gate, tracking 57% lower than “Real Housewives of New Jersey” in the slot.
> TNT’s “Hawthorne” (3.2 million) perked up, climbing 22% from last week.

Wow, what a popular song already! Farther Find Me Now by the Coal Men was the song playing in tonight’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ episode–BITTER TEARS.
Farther Find Me Now seems to be on their new and upcoming album–Kids With Songs. Check out their website!
You can also visit them on myspace. They have a few things on youtube and you can download just Farther Find Me Now, on Amazon.
Amazon seems to be where you can listen to part of the tune.
Great song, isn’t it?

‘Deadliest Catch’
Episode 14: BITTER TEARS
Weeks into the Opilio Season, the fleet is bone tired and desperate for home. As delirium sets in aboard the Cornelia Marie, deadly, rib-crunching mistakes are made. After weeks of relentless hazing the Wizard’s greenhorn gets news from home that could send him packing. On the Northwestern, Jake receives word of a death in the family. These young men will learn that when an ocean lies between a fisherman and his family, tragedy at home spells gut-wrenching, heartbreak at sea.
‘After the Catch’
EPISODE 5: LIFE IS GOOD
A celebration of plentiful fishing kicks off the hour. Phil had a great opie season, but it wasn’t without the usual Harris screaming matches. Phil talks about Jake and Josh and how they are maturing and progressing as professional deckhands. Cooking this week is Phil Harris, and as they indulge in some good food, they’ll make some brutally honest assessments of each other and address some interpersonal tensions that have strained relationships to breaking point. So ‘Deadliest Catch’ fans, do you have a little spare time to dedicate to ‘Deadliest Catch’ on Sunday, July 19th–by any chance?
I ask because at 1pm central on that ’special’ Sunday, the ‘Deadliest’ extravaganza kicks off and continues til the wee hours of the morning!
You’ll be able to watch season 5 again from the opening of the 2008 season on October 15th, 2008 all the way to the end of the King crab fishing episodes but there’s so much more…
At 8pm eastern, Discovery is airing a one-hour special called, “Roughest & Toughest Moments”–and you know there’s been plenty of those! The episode description reads:
Deadliest Catch has captured the most gut wrenching and awe-inspiring
moments in maritime history. Now see the best of the monster seas, boat-crushing ice, scary rescues, wallet-stuffing crab pots, fights, and selfless heroism – all part of the job.
And if that’s not enough, lets not forget the 2-hour movie ‘Deadliest Sea’ that’s been in the works for the last year. It will be airing from 9pm-11pm eastern:
In Kodiak, Alaska, the crew of the St. Christopher prepares to go fishing and sets sail into the face of an oncoming arctic storm. This movie is a thrilling tale of struggle and survival in the fierce open sea.
So you can see now–between the King crab Marathon of season 5, the brand new special, and the full length movie based on a true Bering sea story you should probably clear the calendar don’t you think?

‘Deadliest Catch’–Episode 13:
ENDS OF EARTH
When the fleet gets word of great fishing by the ice pack, the chase is on to the ends of the earth! Hellacious hours and missing pots-a journey to the far north will push these men over the edge.
‘After the Catch’–episode 4:
NO TRESPASSING
This episode begins with Sig reliving his terrifying ice bash into St. Paul harbor to deliver his crab. Keith talks about a different kind of risky move — setting his pots inside Phil’s grounds. A heated debate about ocean territory follows. The captains’ wives come to the table to reveal secrets and little known facts about their husbands, and discuss what it’s like to be the wife of a fisherman. And, Keith steps up to the kitchen to prepare his favorite crab recipe. July 7, 2009

‘Deadliest Catch’–Episode 12: A SLAP IN THE FACE OR A KICK IN THE BUTT!
Late into the season, each skipper faces his own personal brand of hell. Frozen crab, frozen gear, and a frozen harbor chill the hearts of even the most callous fishermen. On the Cornelia Marie, Skipper Phil gambles on the theory that air bubbles on the water means crabs are farting down below. On the Time Bandit, Captain Andy enters St. Paul harbor—now frozen enough to walk across. Five pack-a-day smoker Sig Hansen tries his hand at quitting the habit. When a huge storm kicks up he takes his stress out on his crew. Aboard the Wizard, Captain Keith demands an answer from his greenhorn: “Are you in or out?” It’s a season where very crab has been paid for in headaches—but the rising seas and oncoming ice-pack could make things worse.
‘After the Catch’–Episode 3: FROZEN CRAB
A crab fisherman’s worst enemy? Ice. Ben Bailey shares a frosty mug with Phil, Sig, Keith Johnathan and Andy, as they compare some of the most difficult hurdles they face at sea.
