“DEADLIEST CATCH” Marathon Coming Up, Finally!!

It’s only fitting and it’s long awaited….Finally Discovery is airing a “Deadliest Catch” marathon on Saturday, April 12th, starting at 9am eastern and playing all day and night long!  It starts off with a double episode of Best of Season 1 and then airs all of season 2!  For those of you who’ve never seen the Best of Season 1, this is your chance to watch it, maybe record it!  It’s only fitting they air season 2, since season 1 will be airing one episode per day beginning at the very end of March. 

The week of April 7th is turning out to be a very deadly week for U.S. “Deadliest Catch” fans.  For international fans….Hopefully you’ll get your fill of marathons in the future as well!

Music: Kind of an oldie, but a very nice one

Most “Deadliest Catch” fans have probably heard this but just in case some haven’t….Remember the combination commerical that aired a while back for ”Deadliest Catch” and “I Shouldn’t Be Alive” with that catchy jingle in the background? (See below on first clip) 

 

Well after watching it over and over again and hearing the interesting background music, fans went…no, they literally ran over to Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” fan message boards and pretty much demanded to know more about the artist and the song.  Eventually Discovery had the great jingle turned into a full length track and here it is–another “deadliest” song

Deckboss Scott Templin of the F/V Maverick

The name may not necessarily sound all that familiar, but Scott Templin has been a featured fisherman on “Deadliest Catch” for the last two years.  This last season, he came unto the F/V Maverick as the Deckboss, replacing Blake Painter who skippered the boat during King crab season.  The year before that however, he was a deckhand on the F/V Aleutian Ballad.  And what’s really interesting is that Scott Templin is the man responsible for the film sequence of the notorious rogue wave that knocked the Aleutian Ballad on it’s side.  Mary Swift of the Daily Record has written all about Scott in an article titled, “Roslyn man hooked on fishing”…

…Templin is now deck boss on the Maverick, one of the boats the series has followed. Before that, he was on the Aleutian Ballad, another of the boats that has been part of the series.

    The series captures both the hard work and the dangers of crab fishing.

    Not everyone is cut out for the rigors of the job, Templin says.

Case in point: the Hurricane Katrina survivor who came to Alaska looking for a fresh start.    “That year they mothballed 70 percent of the fleet,” Templin says. “He ended up stuck, living in a tent. We offered him $100 a day. He came out with us and only lasted 30 hours.” The rest of the crew was still working when Templin found the man in the galley. He was done, he told Templin, and started putting on a survival suit, threatening to jump in the water so he could be rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to town.     Templin shakes his head at the memory.    Later, he says, the Discovery Channel gave him some camera equipment. He was at the helm, with the camera turned on, when a 60-foot rogue wave hit the Aleutian Ballad, laying it almost on its side.    “He told me it came back up because it didn’t have the crab pots on it,” says Cathie Moore, Templin’s mother. “If it had been loaded it would have gone down.”Learn more about Scott and read the whole article.

‘Deadliest Catch’ forever

I was roaming Fred Meyer the other day when something snagged my eye: “Deadliest Catch: The Compete First Season,” a five-DVD set for $19.99.

I guess the collection came out in March and I just wasn’t aware of it. Hey, The Highliner has never claimed to be on top of all things pop culture.

Anyway, I went to the Discovery Channel Store and learned that seasons two and three are out on DVD, too.

Now, really, who would have ever guessed that a bunch of half-crazy, Grundens-clad Bering Sea crabbers would be on store shelves with the likes of “The Sopranos,” “Seinfeld” and Harry Potter?
