Blake Painter becomes skipper of his own fishing vessel!

Posted by opilia on February 9, 2008

Blake Painter, who was previously featured on “Deadliest Catch” as deck boss and then later as skipper of the F/V Maverick has been shopping for his own boat now for several months as mentioned previously on Deadliest Reports.  Well he’s found one!  According to his family’s website–the F/V Evening Star–Blake has become the proud owner of the F/V Tradition.

The F/V Tradition is fairly new for a commerical fishing boat.  She was built in 1991, is 58 feet long and made of heavy steel.  Captain Blake will continue his tradition of fishing in Alaska by fishing for cod, halibut, and sablefish in the cold dark waters we’ve all come to know and love!

“Deadliest Catch” autographed goodies on e-bay

Posted by opilia on December 7, 2007

There are a few interesting “Deadliest Catch” items offered on e-bay these days.  Back in September, Capt. Blake Painter of the F/V Maverick and Capt. Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard, both flew down to Houston, Texas to take part in the Houston Hot Sauce Festival.  They also brought with them, some personal belongings to be auctioned off as fund raisers.  Well good news for “Deadliest Catch” fans…some of the items are just now being auctioned off on e-bay and a very valuable item (an autographed Wizard life ring) was auctioned off and then donated back so that it may be re-auctioned off for additional fundraising.  Check it out!

Captain’s Keith and Blake were excellent and just unbelievably nice guys!

Captain Keith Colburn graciously brought an actual Crab Wizard Life Ring to Houston to be Auctioned off.

More on Capt. Keith & Capt. Blake at the Pacific Marine Expo

Posted by opilia on November 24, 2007

Captain Keith Colburn and Captain Blake Painter were the only two ”Deadliest Catch” skippers able to attend the Seattle Pacific Marine Expo from the middle of November as reported earlier.  While there, the two shared more information on their lives as Bering sea fishermen by answering questions from expo attenders. (Photos are all courtesy of Keith Colburn).

As usual there were multitudes of fans of “Deadliest Catch” in attendance.  The skippers, always generous with fans, were more then happy to oblige with pictures and autographs

Captain Blake Painter was also the recipiant of an award from the US Coastguard for his assistance in rescuing tourists from the crippled Empress of the North, after the cruise ship had run up unto rocks in the Juneau, Alaska area.

Captain Keith & Captain Blake at the Pacific Marine Expo

Posted by opilia on November 18, 2007

Captain Blake Painter of the F/V Maverick and Captain Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard attended the Seattle Pacific Marine Expo on Friday, Nov. 16th.  Other skippers listed on the roster are currently still fishing and did not attend.  The two skippers held a question and answer session with fans and discussed crab fishing without delving much into details of the upcoming season of “Deadliest Catch”.  Interesting to note, Captain Keith mentioned it takes 7000 gallons of fuel to head up from Seattle, Washington to Dutch Harbor Alaska, to go fishing, and on a radio interview  (interview starts approximately 10 minutes in) he gave, the skipper responded to a similiar question saying that a boatload of fuel runs approximately $60,000, therefore explaining why Seattle fishermen have a tendency to leave their fishing vessels up in Alaska as much as possible.

As previously announced, the US Coastguard gave awards to certain captains for their assistance in rescuing a boatload of tourists off The Empress of the North, a cruise vessel that ran aground earlier this year in the Juneau, Alaska area.  Captain Blake was of pivotal assistence at the scene of the incident by taking on as many of the tourists as he could fit unto his familiy’s boat, the F/V Evening Star.  You can read more of the rescue on his family’s website.

On another note, both skippers confirmed to fans at the expo that Discovery camera crews were actually not filming on the F/V Maverick and that they would not be on season 4 of “Deadliest Catch”.

Dutch Harbor, the Crabbroker, and Captain Blake Painter

Posted by opilia on October 30, 2007

Even before the Crabbroker has the opportunity to return from his “Crab Connoisseur Tour” held in Dutch Harbor, Alaska this last weekend, it can surely be said that many people–fishermen, skippers, and food industry insiders partook of several great King crab feasts.  The lucky individuals who traveled to Dutch not only went fishing to catch their own King crab, they enjoyed time on the F/V Cornelia Marie, the F/V Timebandit and just last evening, broke bread with none other then Captain Blake Painter and deckboss Scott Templin of the F/V Maverick among others!

It sounded like a great gathering where a very good time was being had by everyone and more details will be available as soon as sponsor–The Crabbroker–has a chance to catch his breath.

Captain Blake reports that the F/V Maverick has fished it’s quota for the King crab season and the crew is headed home today.  Original Productions did indeed film aboard the F/V Maverick and all hope that there was plenty of footage to air so that they may entertain us fans.  Thank you Blake and Scott!  One last note…Captain Blake has been a hard worker for all of his 28 years.  He’s been running both the F/V Maverick and his family’s boat the F/V Evening Star.  As a matter of fact, he’s worked hard enough that he’s decided it’s now time to shop for his own fishing vessel!  It’s true!

“Deadliest Catch” skippers Keith Colburn & Blake Painter at the Houston Hot Sauce Festival

Posted by opilia on October 2, 2007

The Houston Hot Sauce Festival–an annual event for the last eight years–was held September 22nd and 23rd.  Attending were none other then Captains Keith Colburn and Blake Painter!

The festival has been an annual event since 1999 and offers hundreds of vendor products and is considered a “hot” event to attend.  This year, festival promotor Carol Borge decided to combine her favorite show and favorite hot sauce recipe.  The result:  The Deadliest Batch.  And hence, the reason why she had to find a couple of her favorite fishermen  and bring them to Houston. When asked about crab fishing the upcoming season, Captain Blake responded he was indeed heading up to Dutch Harbor, AK to fish the 2007 King crab season.  These skippers donated many photos and memorabilia for the fund raising auction. (photo courtesy of Mystic)

Captain Keith’s donated items fetched a pretty price:  A jacket of his sold for $400 and a signed Wizard life ring was purchased with a high bid of $800.  According to a fan, “Capt. Keith went over and beyond by greeting fans long before the official ‘appearance time’ ” Note to fans:  According to several fans who attended the festival, there will be two new Wizard crew members for season 4, named Jason and Lynn….  Blake Painter, skipper of the F/V Maverick, was sorely missed by many of his fans–especially the fan who posted this particular tribute– during the Opilio season of Deadliest Catch, season 3, as were Rick and Donna Quashnick.  Hopefully we’ll being seeing more of the mighty Mav and crew in season 4.  Til then, enjoy the video!
