There’s been several requests to see Keith Colburn’s ‘After the Catch’ Baked Alaska recipe so courtesy of Discovery, I’ve posted it here. Any one try it, please give us a shout! By the way, are you ready to watch ‘Deadliest Catch’ all day tomorrow?
Captain Keith’s Baked Alaska!
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound cake, 1 lb. frozen loaf
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, in brick box
2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced and sweetened with 2 tablespoons sugar
1 dozen egg whites
1 cup powdered sugar
2 cups orange-flavored liqueur (imitation orange liqueur will not work)
DIRECTIONS:
Slice pound cake horizontally into five thin slices. To build cake: Place one slice on foil-lined baking pan. Remove ice cream from box. Cut into two pieces and place on top of cake slice. Place two slices of cake along the long sides of ice cream. Cut one slice in half and place on ends. Spoon strawberries on top of ice cream and place last slice of cake over top. Press together firmly with hands to form compact loaf cake. Sprinkle over all with 1 cup orange liqueur. Set aside in freezer while making meringue. (This can be made ahead to this point. Wrap tightly in foil to avoid drying out.)
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
To make meringue: Beat egg whites on high until soft peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating constantly until stiff peaks form. Working quickly, place one-third of the meringue in a pastry bag. Set aside. Completely cover cake with remaining meringue, spreading evenly and completely, sealing bottom edge. With pastry bag, decorate top and sides. Set in 450-degree oven for 4-5 minutes, or until meringue is lightly browned. Quickly slide onto a chilled serving plate. To flambé, heat orange liqueur and pour over cake. Light immediately.
Slice and serve immediately. (If not ready to serve immediately, place baked Alaska in freezer so ice cream does not melt. Flambé when ready to serve.) Serves 8-10.

Sig Hansen cooking up a storm on 'After the Catch', episode 3, season 3. (image Discovery)
Over the years some of the featured skippers have shared a few recipes with us, such as Ragnhild from the Farwest Leader, the Hillstrands, Phil Harris on the Paula Deen show, and even Sig & Edgar Hansen in a TV Guide issue. Well now we have more recipes to try out as one of the show’s fishermen is cooking up seafood during each episode of ‘After the Catch’. While I can’t say I’ll be trying out Edgar’s Fish Head Soup anytime soon, Sig Hansen’s Fish Cakes look pretty interesting!
INGREDIENTS:
2 pounds fresh cod fillets
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3 tablespoons potato starch
1/2 medium onion
2 cups half and half
DIRECTIONS:
Drain excess moisture from cod by leaving it in fridge on paper towels.
Use a food processor to chop the onion. Add the cod and blend, adding the half and half, then potato starch and egg. Add seasoning and blend into a thick paste.
Heat an inch and a half of oil in a deep skillet. Using a large spoon, drop meatball-size globs into the oil. Roll over as they brown. They will puff and try to float as they cook. Drain and serve or cool and reheat in a microwave. Serve as a snack or with boiled potatoes and carrots with brown gravy. Serves 8-10.

This 3rd season of ‘After the Catch’ was filmed in Sunny San Diego, California just recently! Hosting tonight is Cash Cab’s Ben Bailey, who previously met up with some of these skippers in New York during an episode of ‘Deadliest Catch’ Cash Cab. Make sure to tune in every Tuesday night after ‘Deadliest Catch’ for the next five weeks!
…Filmed on location at Pacific Beach’s legendary surfer bar, R.T. Longboard’s, Captains Keith, Phil, Sig, Johnathan and Andy are joined by special guests including fellow veteran fisherman, Coast Guard rescue teams, surviving members of the F/V Katmai and, for the first time, the women behind the men. Wives June Hansen, Louise Hansen and Florence Colburn talk about life on the homefront, how they first met their mates and who really wears the grundens in the relationship. So pull up a bar stool.

For all of us ‘After the Catch’ fans…Itunes is now offering downloads of both season 1 & 2 of ‘After the Catch’. For a measly few bucks you can purchase all episodes aired, commercial free! …Can’t hardly beat that and its the first time they’ve been offered as such!

For all Wizard fans, you’ll be glad to know that earlier this summer, the F/V Wizard website constructed their official merchandise store, finally! In a press release sent out at the end of June, the Florida based ad agency announced they had constructed the Crab Wizard online store and Capt. Keith, himself said, “I’m so excited to be able to offer a line of outerwear with our logo online. Fans have been requesting it for a long time and I’m happy Edelsbacher Design Group made it happen.” Discriminating shoppers will also be happy to note, “The Crabwizard’s online store offers a variety of tee shirts, hats, and sweatshirts available in multiple colors for both Wizards and Wizettes are available for purchase. Captain Colburn requires that all Crabwizard products offered on his site be screen-printed and embroidered in the USA. Also, that all the clothing textiles used are manufactured in the USA and assembled in countries that practice fair trade policies.”

And last but not least, most fans are already familiar with the F/V Cornelia Marie website, along with Captain Phil’s official line of coffee, but there’s been another fairly new addition to the online presence of the Harris clan, and that is the captainphilharris. com website that now offers merchandise as well. The understanding is that both official websites will someday merge and the result will be a complete marriage of all that is related to Captain Phil, family, and ship!

In the Local News section of The Gloucester Daily Times, there was some interesting tidbits of information on ‘Deadliest Catch’ and how its stars are connected in one way or another, to the east coast–Gloucester in particular…
‘Catch’ Connections
Several of “The Deadliest Catch” cast members already had Gloucester connections before coming here in early June to film this year’s “After the Catch II” special at Pratty’s CAV.
Jonathan Hillstrand, cocaptain and owner of the crabber Time Bandit, fished out of Gloucester aboard the deep-sea red crabber Hannah Boden.
In addition, the distant ancestors of show host Mike Rowe, who resides in Baltimore and is on the road about 300 days out of the year, lived in Gloucester and had Rowe Square named after them.
Lastly, Capt. Sten Skaar’s family came to Gloucester in the late 1970s and purchased the Parisi family’s 109-foot combination seiner/dragger LaRegina. The Skaars briefly worked the all-white steel vessel as a West Coast crabber before it sank, most likely after an up-coming 700-foot crab trap hit and ruptured external piping. Sten Skaar skippers and co-owns the crabber North American today.

Captains Keith Colburn, Andy & Johnathan Hillstrand, along with Mike Rowe pose for an interesting picture while filming ‘After the Catch’ in Gloucester just a few days ago. Interesting to note– Notice how Mike Rowe is holding his lobster way out away from his body? Know why? It’s because lucky Mike Rowe gets to wear brand new ‘Deadliest Catch’ gear before anyone else and he doesnt want to get dirty!!! He’s sporting a brand new Time Bandit hat and he’s got himself a Wizard hoodie that are both so new, they aren’t even available to fans as of yet! But If you’re interested in new and available Time Bandit gear, check out their store. You’ll have to wait just a little while longer for the Wizard hoodie but check out a close up of the logo on flickr! Mike Rowe gets all the good stuff, doesn’t he? You can also view other pretty interesting Gloucester ‘Deadliest Catch’ photos at GoodMorning Gloucester right here on wordpress!
